The cormorant in a low, forward-leaning pose — bill angled down, body compact and hunched, brooding and intense. At 19"H this hand carved wooden cormorant has a distinctly dramatic quality quite different from the upright poses — dark, angular, and striking.

Aviologie's style has elements of distressing and natural variation that are part of what makes each piece unique. Their photos represent the birds accurately, but they are individually hand carved pieces with the soul of variation, not cast resin replicas.
Their bases are off cuts of wood logs that are intentionally left to the elements — sun, rain, and time to enhance natural character like a found object in the woods. Insect holes, cracks, weathering etc are intended to reflect Aviologie's imperfect, handmade aesthetic.
Jesus said "consider the birds" (Luke 12:24), so they did!
Designed on Vancouver Island by Anna & David, each bird is brought to life by the same three families of skilled artisans they have supported, and been supported by, for over 15 years.
Drawing on centuries-old village carving techniques, they blend indigenous folk art with modern design to create timeless art pieces that are simple, refined, and equally at home in settings (rustic, classic or modern), as varied as their customers.
